Introduction:

Our focus will always be to ensure a holistic approach in our services, giving each child the most effective care possible. While the children are at Cotlands Western Cape we encourage the participation of the families and also aim to empower them through guidance and training.

 

 

Western Cape Paediatric Hospice:

The hospice was established in 2003 out of the need to provide institutional care for children in an under resourced area and where the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS is above the Western Cape provincial average rate of 22%.

  • Providing holistic residential care for up to 26 children.
  • End stage of an incurable disease (AIDS, etc).
  • Chronically ill child with little or no resources to care at home.
  • Palliative care to children with a life threatening illness. Children are kept pain free and comfortable, even during the end stages. We focus on quality of life by giving them the opportunity to live a normal life as far as possible with a warm and loving surrounding. Respite care
  • Residential care for chronically ill abandoned babies.
  • Antiretroviral therapy (ART) where clinically indicated.
  • Educating families about HIV/AIDS and the importance of complying with the ART regime.
  • 0 – 12 yrs
  • Short term placement.

Western Cape Sanctuary:

Cotlands Western Cape identified a need for a place of safety for children in the surrounding communities. The Sanctuary was opened in April 2008 on the same premises as Cotlands Hospice and provides the following:

 

  • Temporary placements for abused, abandoned, neglected and orphaned children until they can be reunited with their families or until alternative suitable community placements can be arranged.
  • Accommodation for 20 children from birth to 12 years.
  • No discrimination towards race, culture or religion.
  • Networking with Social workers in the community, other NGO’s in the area, Local Hospitals and the South African Police.
  • Focus on developmental skills and school readiness.
  • Social Development: group games, respect for others opinions and ideas and adaption to other children.
  • All of these children receive specialised care and all receive therapy and stimulation from our social workers, physiotherapist, speech therapist and occupational therapist.

Nursery School

The Children that are cared for at Cotlands Western Cape are often underdeveloped and in need of a formal system of education before being placed in mainstream schooling. An ECD (Early childhood development) centre in the form of a nursery school was opened in January 2009 on the same premises.

  • To plan learning opportunities for children from 2 years to 10 years of age.
  • Planning of activities that promote social, physical and intellectual development.
  • To prepare an implement lessons
  • Asses each child’s performance and work development issues
  • Administrative on the school and each child’s progress.
  • Playroom Management.

Macassar Haven

In 2005, Cotlands acquired Macassar Haven, a Place of Safety facility — about 6 km from Cotlands’ Western Cape site in Helderberg.

  • The Haven cares for abused, abandoned, orphaned and or HIV-positive children until they can be reunited with their families or until suitable alternative community placements can be arranged.
  • Temporary placement for children referred by Social workers, police and children’s’ court.
  • Medical, physical and psychosocial needs of the child are addressed..
  • Individual attention is given to the children with regards to homework..
  • Accommodation for 12 children from 0 – 12 years..
  • Holiday programmes and outings organised.

Home Based Care

Cotlands Western Cape identified a need for a follow up programme for the children who had been in our care. Our home based care programme is operated by a professional nurse who follows up on children referred by Ikwezi Clinic in Nomzamo and Hottentots Holland antiretroviral (ARV) clinic that are not adhering to ARV medication.

  • Support and monitoring ARV treatment of children in the community who have been discharged from Cotlands.
  • Referrals from Helderberg Hospital and Ikwezi Clinic.
  • Assisting families to link up with resources such as social grants.
  • Provision of material relief, such as milk formula for babies, food, clothing and toys.
  • Counselling families.
  • Areas include: Somerset West, Strand, Nomzamo, Lwandle, Gordons Bay and Macassar.

How Can You Help?

Volunteers

Community involvement is encouraged at Cotlands and we have a volunteer programme for local and international folk who would like to actively become involved with the children.

  • 2-3 intakes a year for volunteers who would like to become involved with Cotlands Western Cape.
  • Volunteers give at least 2 hours a week of their time for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Assistance with educational activities, children, fundraising, administration, repair and maintenance work.
  • Preparation and maintenance of food garden.

 

 

Fundraising:

Our Mission is to generate an income in a professional and ethical manner which ensures the continuity of Cotlands sustainability projects and services.

 

  • Corporate involvement through BEE initiatives. Strategic partnerships that benefit the Donor and Cotlands.
  • We encourage volunteers to assist us with organisation of events and fundraising projects, to become active members of the Marketing and Fundraising committees.

 

Any financial donation (which is tax deductable) will be used to provide vital support to children in our care.
