André on his 2-in-1 World Record

André van Zijl set yet another World Record this year! He lived in a sponsored care for 50 days, parked inside the Glen Shopping centre to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS orphans. Since 1988, André van Zijl has visited 22 countries in Africa addressed more than 10 million people in person and via the media.
Cotlands is proud to be a beneficiary of André’s mission as he managed to raise some funds for us during his stay at the mall. André started his world record on Saturday, 17 April 2010 at the mall, and remained there until Sunday, 6 June 2010 (50 days later). This World Record was in fact, a 2-in-1 record. The first, for a person living in a vehicle for 50 days and the second, for the longest time one person has spent in one shopping centre at any given time.
1.) A time sheet to be completed every hour that André has completed in the car. The time sheet may only be completed by a person over the age of 18 that is of sane and sober habits. It is compulsory that two witnesses sign the time sheets on an hourly basis it is imperative that the time sheets are kept up to date on an hourly basis. Failure to comply with the hourly signing of the time sheets can and will result in André being disqualified from claiming the world record.
2.) André is allowed 5 minutes after every completed hour and the 5 minutes may be accumulated. However André may never leave the vehicle for more than 30 minutes in any given 24 hours completed.
3.) André is not allowed under any given circumstances to move away from the vehicle or shopping centre for a distance exceeding a 200 metre radius.
4.) André may indulge in any activity, exercises and past times of his choice as long as the fore mentioned are not offensive, obscene or embarrassing to the sponsors or the public.
5.) André must for all practical purposes live in the vehicle and venue for the duration of 50 days.
6.) The only persons allowed in the vehicle with André will be at his discretion.
7.) The bulk of André’s body must at all times remain in the vehicle (with the exception of his 30 minute bathroom break)
8.) The public must have access to André at all times during the day.
We say a hearty Congratulations on this wonderful achievement and sincere thanks for remembering Cotlands and our cause.
PRENATAL TO PRIMARY COMPETITION WINNERS:
Our Prenatal to Primary (P2P) Photo Competition closed Friday, 30 April 2010. Since October 2009, the competition has made its way through some exhibitions, nursery schools and malls to gain entries in aid of raising funds for our cause.
The competition involved parents sending in their child’s photograph taken either on the day of the exhibition or prior to the event. In doing so, a donation of R40 was made as entry to the competition. At the end of the competition, the entries were sent for judging – as with most competitions of this nature, it must have been a difficult decision as every child is precious to us. The results took longer than expected but the finalists and winners were determined in the last week of May.
Our prize-giving was held at Cotlands head office on Friday, 4 June 2010. The event was successful with all of the sponsored prizes arriving on time and as promised. The majority of our winners and their parents, as well as members of our sponsors, were present at the event, including a photographer from Living and Loving in which the event may be further published.

The SIMS Mini Challenge in Johannesburg and Cape Town last month went off successfully. The mini challenge aimed to give contenders a taste of what they could expect from the SIMSA Challenge in September this year.
The Cotlands team in Johannesburg and also had an opportunity to experience what the event would be like later on this year. While challenging at first, our team pulled every physical and mental muscle to come 7th out of 14 teams that entered. A minor setback lost us 10 minutes off our time during the race when we were penalised for accidentally treading on the wrong path – but, we quickly got back on track, making the most of the remainder of the challenge.
We’re so proud of the effort of our colleagues put into the exercise and look forward to an exciting challenge in Magaliesburg later this year!

Companies shared their experiences, and some of the lessons learnt include the following:
•
Planning is critical
• Evaluating the circumstances and environment you are operating in, is the key before allocating resources
• Always gather as much information as possible before attempting to solve a problem
• Operating under pressure causes you to make mistakes - always double check!
• Before presenting a solution always have a team member review it
• Teamwork is critical to getting the best solution.
