The Medical Knowledge Institute (MKI) is an international non-profit foundation committed to healthcare education and information. MKI acts from the premise that healthcare is a human right and has designed programmes which aim to improve the quality and humanitarian values of life, especially in developing countries.
The healthcare information programme is aimed at making available trustworthy information on healthcare to healthcare professionals and organisations worldwide. MKI has set up a number of Health Information Centres (HIC) around South Africa. The main aim of the centres is to provide healthcare education and healthcare information to the general public from all walks of life to promote individual and community health, taking into consideration their individual cultural sensitivities. Cotlands has partnered with MKI on this project and has established a HIC at our community centre in Diepkloof, Soweto.
The centres offer a selection of training courses which teach different life skills, and provide for contacts with relevant support and information. Each centre also houses a simple public health library. Priority has been given to practical publications such as: child health, primary health care, family planning, primary HIV/AIDS care, common skin diseases, etc

Message from the De Beers Fund
The De Beers Fund thanks Cotlands for the privilege of partnering with this exemplary childcare organisation, and specifically with the Soweto Home-Based Care and Counselling Project.
Our doing so forms part of an annual corporate social investment undertaking that sees De Beers and its operations working with over 150 organisations throughout South Africa with investments in people and communities in whom we believe, in a country confident in her liberty.
De Beers has never regarded CSI as frivolous activity and has acted in accordance with a philosophy summed up in 1954 by then De Beers Chairman Sir Ernest Oppenheimer: “…the purpose of the company is to make profits for its shareholders, but to do so in a way that makes a real and lasting contribution to the countries and communities in which it operates”.
